06 OCTOBER 2016, AMSTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS
Summary
On 25 October KLIK Amsterdam Animation Festival will kick off its ninth edition. For six days the festival gathers over 300 of the world's best animations in EYE in Amsterdam. Alongside animated films, KLIK also presents exhibitions, workshops, talks, and live performances that spotlight the diversity and possibilities of animation. On the last day of the festival KLIK presents special programs for kids. Tickets now available.Heart of the festival’s program is the international competition for animated shorts. In carefully curated short-film programs, divided into several categories, KLIK presents the very best animated shorts from all over the world. These films compete for one of the highly-coveted KLIK Awards. This year the festival received over 1800 entries from 80 countries.
Live performances
Internationally acclaimed harpist Lavinia Meijer will accompany the film Behind the Telescopes with a live performance. This compelling film about young Lyra’s dream of becoming an astronaut is a joint production of Lavinia Meijer and animator Aimée de Jongh.
Another special program that joins live performance with animation is a live-narrated screening of The Idea (L'Idée), the 1932 animated film by Berthold Bartosch that charts a woman’s radical idea to go naked and the revolution it inspires. Accompanying the original film with all-new narration, Sahand Sahebdivani (Dutch Storyteller of the Year 2014) and pianist Anastasis Sarakatsanos will put this classic film in a whole new perspective. This program is presented in collaboration with the International Storytelling Festival Amsterdam.
The World We Live In
With this year’s theme, KLIK invites festivalgoers to take a closer look at the world around them through a selection of short-film programs, feature-length movies and installations.
Visitors can go for a journey through awe-inspiring animated landscapes, or join a cinematic bike ride through North Amsterdam. KLIK also presents a selection of recent feature films — The Red Turtle, Eden’s Edge, Louise by the Shore, and The Girl Without Hands — that tell their stories through breath-taking landscapes. The festival also put together the special exhibition |re|Framing Utopia, in which an international selection of artists investigates our shifting perceptions of and involvement in nature including David OReilly and José Miguel Biscaya.
Artists in focus: Aymeric Kevin, Piet Kroon, Mariano Melman
KLIK invites today’s voices in animation to take you behind their animated scenes in a series of inspiring presentations.
Having worked on shows like Ping Pong, Space Dandy, the short Kick-Heart, and the Adventure Time episode ‘Food Chain’, background director Aymeric Kevin will share his processes, discuss the background industry's unspoken heroes, and a few concepts on what he believes makes backgrounds memorable.
Internationally acclaimed writer and director Piet Kroon, know for his work on Shrek and Despicable Me, will give a presentation on how a story is developed for a feature-length animated film. Sharing sequences from Shrek 2, Kroon will talk about how ideas are formed and developed and how they find their final form in what is often a process of trial and error.
Producer Mariano Melman will discuss a production approach to storytelling in virtual reality, specifically based on his experience on Nexus’ new 360° VR film project Rain or Shine. In his presentation Melman will focus on scheduling, the creative process and the kind of animation used to produce a film for this exciting new technology.
